2023 has brought sad news to the Welsh Folk Dance Society.  One of our oldest and most faithful life members, known to most of us as “Betty” has passed away.

Geoff Jenkins, Betty Davies and John Idris

In the photograph she is seen adjudicating the dance competitions at the Aberystwyth Eisteddfod with John Idris Jones and the late Geoff Jenkins. (This information is taken from the back of the photograph.) Her knowledge of the history of the Welsh Folk Dance Society and its dances was profound. She had a wonderful memory and a tremendous sense of humour. A personal friend of Pat Shaw and Marion Owen, she composed a dance, “Rhiwfelen” (music by Buddug Evans), in memory of Bryn Owen, which she introduced and taught at a WFDS course held at Baskerville Hall, near Hay on Wye. Her family has asked for the following message to be forwarded to all those who have known and enjoyed Betty’s company over the years.

Elizabeth Ellen Davies (Betty)

Sadly, Betty died early on Boxing Day 2022, aged 93. In September she was admitted to the Maelor Hospital (Wrexham), and as her health improved, she was enjoying her magazines and crossword puzzles.

Her immediate family visited very regularly and were with her on Christmas Eve, sitting in her chair reading the latest delivery of her Christmas cards. She died very peacefully.

The funeral service and interment will be held on January 26th:

1pm – St Martin’s Church, Llay, Wrexham. LL12 0SB

2pm –  Pentre Bychan Crematorium, Rhostyllen, Wrexham. LL14 4EP

Tricia (Patricia Collins, Niece)

Her dance shoes – they still meant a lot to her.
